Crusty Hot Buscuits

Another favorite from Grandma Neola Hallows' collection, compiled by Aunt Jill.
2 1/4 cups sifted flour
4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
1/2 tsp. salt
2 Tbsp. sugar
1/3 cup shortening
2/3 cup milk
1 egg, unbeaten
Sift together the first 5 ingredients. Cut shortening into mixture to make course crumbs. Add the milk, then the egg. Mix with a fork until dough follows fork around bowl.
Knead on a floured board five or six times. Roll or pat to 1/2" thickness; cut out with biscuit cutter or edge of round glass.
Place on a baking sheet about 3/4" apart and bake 10-12 minutes. Makes 16 medium biscuits.
